Short description of ATSS-TC

Artificial Transportation Systems and Simulation (ATSS-TC)

The Artificial Transportation Systems and Simulation (ATSS-TC) is a sub-committee of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society. The aim of ATSS-TC is to foster the discussion on issues concerning the development of Artificial Transportation Systems and Simulation as a means to devise, test and validate ITS-based technologies. With the ability to integrate different transportation models and solutions in a virtual environment, ATSS serve as an aid to support decisions made by engineers and practitioners in a controlled and safe manner. They also provide a natural ground where new approaches can be experimented while avoiding natural drawbacks of dealing directly with real critical domains, such as ITS. On the basis of theories and methodologies borrowed from a wide spectrum of disciplines, such as the Social Sciences, Distributed Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Multi-agent Systems, Virtual Reality and many others, many important issues arise which challenge and motivate many researchers and practitioners from multidisciplinary fields, as well as different technical and scientific communities. ATSS-TC constitutes a technical collaboration network where researchers and practitioners share their visions and experiences, generating a dynamic and evolving knowledge body supporting the theorisation and practical realisation of artificial transportation systems features and simulation methodologies, tools and test-beds. The main topics of interest to ATSS-TC include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Agent-based modelling and social simulation in MAS-T (multi-agent systems applied to traffic and transportation)
  • Real-world agent architectures
  • Hardware-, software-, and human-in-the-loop simulation
  • Agent-human interactions
  • Environment modelling and interaction protocols (normative environments, negotiation, etc.)
  • Learning and adaptation, collaboration, cooperation, competition, coalitions in traffic and transportation models
  • Multi-resolution simulation, simulator interoperability, simulation as a service, cloud-based simulation
  • Growing artificial societies in artificial transportation systems
  • Large scale simulation, calibration and validation of agent-based models for large traffic and transportation networks
  • New trends and inspirational metaphors for artificial transportation systems and simulation.

Historically, ATSS-TC has been involved in promoting the field of ATSS within the IEEE ITS Society’s annual conferences on Intelligent Transportation Systems. This has been achieved through a series of workshops and special sessions, each of which organised biannually in alternate years, at ITSCs.

ATSS workshops aim primarily at discussing in an informal environment trends, work in progress and new ideas related to artificial transportation systems and simulation. The 2016’s edition of the ATSS Workshop was the 6th of the series, following the successful editions previously held in Shanghai (2004), in Toronto (2006), in Beijing (2008), in Madeira (2010), and in Qingdao (2014). The ATSS Workshop series has been established as an event of reference held regularly at IEEE ITS Conferences. On the other hand, ATSS special sessions are intended to be focused on specific developments and topics or problems within the field, based on sound results or projects already in an advanced stage of development. Previous editions of the ATSS Special Session series have held in Seattle (2007), in St. Louis (2009), in Washington, DC (2011), in the Hague (2013), and in Las Palmas (2015).

Besides the workshop and special session series, ATSS-TC has collaborated with the technical activity sub-committee on Human Factors on ITS in the organisation of the Human Factors in IV workshop series since its genesis in 2013, when the first edition was held at IEEE IV 2013.

Work Plan for 2017

The ATSS-TC’s activities for 2017 include, for the moment, the following activities planned so far:

  • Tutorial on Smart Mobility and Social Simulation, at the 1st IEEE International Summer School on Smart Cities, Natal, Brazil, August 6-11, 2017 (http://s3c.imd.ufrn.br/);
  • Special Session on Artificial Transportation Systems and Simulation at IEEE ITSC 2017, Yokohama, Japan, October 16-19, 2017.

The ATSS technical sub-committee has been very active over the years, organising a series of workshops and special sessions at IEEE ITS Society’s flagship conference, namely IEEE ITSC. Besides the ATSS workshop and special session series, the ATSS-TC has co-organised the Human-Factors in Intelligent Vehicles (HFIV) workshop series at IEEE IV conferences, since 2013. It is worth mentioning that ATSS-TC’s activities resulted in two special issues published in the prestigious IEEE Transactions on ITS, and an edited book, published by Elsevier. Another important result of the ATSS-TC’s activities was the creation of the ITS Society’s technical activities sub-committee on Human Factors in ITS, originated from previous activities of ATSS-TC on topics related to human factors and behaviour modelling. A short summary of all ATSS workshops and special sessions organised to date is presented in the description of ATSS-TC, in the last section of this document.
